School Profile and Demographics

Our demographic enrollment reflects a gradual increase in minority students over the last ten years. As we focus on increased academic achievement for all students, we need to search for ways to increase minority participation in advanced level courses (Honors and AP/GT levels). Our current course enrollments do not reflect a consistent participation of minority students in these advanced level courses. Our Action Plan, though, supports new programs to identify and support increased minority awareness of the benefits of enrolling Honors and GT students.

PSAT/SAT preparation is a school wide focus this year. Although statistics demonstrate that Pikesville High School’s PSAT/SAT scores surpass state and national averages, further analysis concludes that minority students and students taking no upper level courses often receive scores below national and state averages. The data supports the finding that participation in upper level courses correlates to higher verbal and math scores. This years increase of 100 students taking the PSAT in October demonstrates Pikesville High School’s continued efforts to make all students aware of the importance of taking the College Board tests.

Pikesville High School offers 22 Advanced Placement courses. Historically, over 80% of our students who take the AP tests score 3 or better on the test. As we increase the number of minority students who enroll in advanced level courses, we will see more minority students participating in the AP testing.

We believe that reinstituting the honor roll has increased academic achievement for all students. Students participating in sports achieved honor roll status at a rate of 70%. These student athletes received certificates and recognition at the sports banquets held after each season. We hope that recognizing students successes, and assisting students who fail to reach a 3.0 GPA, will benefit all students.
